One of the first was not in stereographic but in fisheye projection on
the page of professor Dersch in his virtual tour of Marburg in 2000.
Here is the reconstructed version, since his original page was deleted
during the ipix quarrels:

It would also be interesting to know who coined the term "Little
Planet". I first used it in a post to PanotoolsNG in 2005:
http://www.panotools.org/mailarchive/msg/39781#msg39781
but I don't remember whether I read it somewhere before...

Didn't Ian have some in 91 or 92? So probably right soon after panotools
came out.

Hi Ayrton!

The first stereographic 'little planets' I encountered, as distinct
from normal fisheye projection, were on this site in late 2005:
http://digitalurban.blogspot.co.uk/2005/10/chicago-yacht-club-skyline-panorama.html

I tried to reproduce the effect:
http://www.bruno.postle.net/2006/fisheye-to-stereographic/

Then Pablo added stereographic output projection to libpano13 in
April 2006.

You might want to check with Ken Turkowski on this, since he authored a number of early patents on spherical (and other) stitching algorithms, as well as the work and patents of Ned Greene in the 1980s, which predated by a decade or more those of Apple and IPIX / Omniview.  Of course, Helmut Dersch and quite a few others did extensive work in this area, as well.  But Ken is likely far more familiar about the background and history of this technology and its evolution.

As far as different projections, such as “little planet” vs.. equirectangular, etc., that is basically 3D geometry.  Once you have a full 360°x180° image (stitched, rendered, etc.), whether spherical, cubic, or other, you’re simply remapping it to the face(s) of another geometric shape.

Steroscopic, however, is a whole different (and far more complex) ball game..

Here’s an article that Ken Turkowski wrote back in 1999, that provides further reference.

I always related little planet with the ilustrations of writter Antoine de Saint-Exupery and his novella The Little Prince from 1943. My oldest daughter is 25 and when she was a kindergarden pupil I read her that novella many times. So little planet - little prince... that was my subjective interpretation. Who and why used that term At first I don't know.

Hi Ayrton!

The first stereographic 'little planets' I encountered, as distinct
from normal fisheye projection, were on this site in late 2005:
http://digitalurban.blogspot.co.uk/2005/10/chicago-yacht-club-skyline-panorama.html

I tried to reproduce the effect:
http://www.bruno.postle.net/2006/fisheye-to-stereographic/

Then Pablo added stereographic output projection to libpano13 in
April 2006.

The little planet effect is much, much older.

More than a century ago, in the time of the painted panorama, "little
planets" were used as "floorplans" to tell spectators what they saw in
which part of the panorama.

Re: Little Planet - first one

AYRTON - avi
THANK you ALL who got the time to answer me

I'm preparing a workshop down here in Rio and will be speaking about this,
so I wanted to know more about it

I remember that Klaus from KRPano introduced the effect of stenographic
projection on 360 panoramas online with his player in 2008

Now I know much more about

THANK YOU ALL

Cheers
Ayrton
